Hi. This is Emily
from Taiwan, finance and accounting work background.
First of all, I
would like to recommend a song by #RichieJen: #TooSoftHearted
Wish you success in your job search;
However, to remind all the job seekers, it’s just like the lyrics in this
song:
”If it is not yours, do not force to have it! “😞
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSWeurc1yMw
In a work
interview, have you ever been asked questions or well prepared about your
personal appearance?! Not often, right?! How would you react if those questions
imply your personal image may not be good for your career development?!
It’s 2023/6, it’s
graduation season and also the job seeking season;
In TV news report,
there was a male job seeker, K, being asked about his bald head situation:
”What you will do if your bald head style makes customers feel pressured or
fearful?!” , K said, he felt his confidence
was distroyed in this kind of question, he spent months to recover from
it….…
It doesn’t matter
this was a true story or K was just kidding, and, regardless the real intention
of this question or its appropriateness, I would like to share my opinion about
bald headed style appearance first:
1. Perceptions: I’m
curious about how many people would feel scared when they see persons who are
bald-headed and in suits at work?
2. Convenience: There
were bald headed male colleagues/managers in my workplace, in my first
impression on their appearance, I felt they don’t need to spend too much time
on their hairstyle, I felt no fear when seeing them.
3. Smart mind: In
experience as above 2, I’ve met 3 persons in bald hairstyle at the companies I
worked for, 2 of them, their work level were [CEO], as high as someone who needs
to report to the board of directors and do business results presentation in an
auditorium in shareholders meetings. Furthermore, the 3rd. one, he
was assigned to be the General Manager of our new business at that moment, it
was also a high-level work position in the company and he was also doing great.
Thus, regarding above 1., I’m shocked about what the interviewer asked, and, if
those 3 colleagues and managers were the interviewees, how they would like to respond
for this kind of question?!
In Taiwan, there is a Group founder
and the group net worth is tens of billions, however, this founder is also
bald-headed, and I’ve never heard of someone would feel fearful when seeing
this boss, on the contrary, people feel he looks lovely because of his
full-moon face! 😊
No one would like to promote/hire a
person who may scare customers as the big leader in their work environment, it
means, they don’t think bald head style would scares others.
4. Clean: When eating
out and found the cook is bald-headed, usually, I foresee it is impossible
there will be hair in the meal. 😍
Points of view I
would like to share are:
1.Is it possible that it is because of our less self–confidence that we will heavily be influenced if someone
has opinion on our appearance?!
2.To accept things we cannot /difficult to change in
ourselves is a way of lifting self -confidence.
Please try.
3.An interviewer talked
about Emily: She needs to lose weight! 😆😆😆 Do you know how I reacted?! Why?!
4.“Sometimes”, we need to say this if our
point of view is different:[This question is interesting….]
Review again:

[#Career #JobSearch #Interview] Fear, job application with no relatedwork experience interview
1.Is it possible that it is
because of our less self–confidence that we will heavily be influenced if someone has opinion on our
appearance?!
When others have opinion on our
appearance, it means, they noticed something
in our appearance, this may be an unexpected thing, and however, it is not
necessary positive or negative just like the hairstyle case above.
To look at ourselves, how we would
like to comment on our own appearance?!
This is my idea:
Regarding how we look, there is
natural state and acquired state, and, unless
we didn’t prepare for this kind of question, otherwise, all the
interviewees would like to be in a style accepted
by themselves for meetings, if interviewers’ compliments or negative
comments on it would causes huge
mood swings (just like mentioned above, last
for months), does it mean this interviewee takes others’ comment as
truth and ignores their own judgement?!
It is good to be praised, please
remember to show gratitude toward it, however, if the comment is negative,
please also remember to thank them letting you know their opinion, however, that is for your reference only,
maybe, another potential employer or
professional stylist won’t agree with those negative opinion on your
prepared style?! And, what’s your idea about your own style?! In an interview, the most important
thing is to share our own positive opinion, and how much efforts we’ve made in
order to have the opportunity to be hired. Moreover, not only your
appearance but other interview questions, how you will explain/exchange idea if
there is something you have another kind of belief different from theirs?! This is what the job seekers
should take into consideration. What do you think about this concept?!
2.To
accept things we cannot /difficult to change in ourselves is a way of lifting
self -confidence. Please try.
If some facts are not good for your job
seeking, just like below 3. situation that I’m
always big, it’s always not easy to me to buy clothes in right size
since I was a child, it is difficult to change this kind of situation, but I’ve
already accepted it, and I feel happy
looking like my father, people say I’m the work of his copy!😄 I believe, when you
truly accept your own situation, no positive or negative comments on you would
cause impact on how you feel.
How about this?! Even
strangers know it’s a father and his daughter!
(Dad:I do feel helpless
I have a daughter and she looks like me….always laughing crazily!)
3. An interviewer talked
about Emily: She needs to lose weight! 😆😆😆 Do you know how I reacted?! Why?!
I don’t drive. There was an
interview opportunity that I spent 5 hours to go there for a special assistant
to boss work position, however, that interview only spent 3 minutes and the
clue showed I didn’t pass, I spent around 10 hours in the whole transportation.
My former manager recommended me for
this opportunity, she euphemistically informed me what the boss said, it truly
means: this person should lose
weight! She is too big! I feel pressured besdie her!
I burst into
laughter and didn’t explain much, I didn’t feel sad,
either. It reminded me of how that boss looked like, I can understand, he is
not as tall as the general situation; I just took it as a kind of experience
and memory! And….👉What the boss said
is right! My family also calls me Fatty! 😆😆😆 At work, we also get compliment or something negative about our appearance,
and, so what?! I’m not applying for a model work. Except for talking about
“dress for occasions and the appropriateness”, otherwise, I care less about
what people comment about appearance at work. What about you?!
When I was a young manager, my
direct manager disapproved a work candidate only because of her overweight
situation, and, it was not because of health issue, it was because “possibly
not looking good” of her, however, that candidate matched all the requirements,
especially her good personality that she would like to recommend someone else
when my manager asked for help from her, we really got another application from
her friend. I feel that was unfair to her, however, only I can do was to accept
it but wish her best in her job search and work in the future.
4. “Sometimes”, we need to say this if our
point of view is different:[This question is interesting….]
Take the issue of appearance as an
exmaple:(Please adjust according to needs
and truth)
Question: What you would
do if your bald head scares clients or makes them feel pressured?!
Answer for
reference:
This question is
interesting, it’s different from my own experience; usually, people
I met for the first time were curious about my bald head, and this started our
conversation and removed the distance between us. Thank you for this
information, I’ll try my best to let them feel I’m friendly and will cause
nothing pushy or I won’t give them pressure.
Take the issue of professional work
as an example, [Customer Service Manager] interview question: (Please adjust according to needs and truth)
Question:.. There was a
customer complaint case, we should respect all the customers, though, due to
our current work policy, before our Legal Department confirmation, no one is
allowed to apologize on behalf of our company, including Customer Service,
Sales and the President, this rule is to avoid any misinterpretation about our
apology and to avoid any exaggeration of this case.
Answer for
reference:
Thank you for
sharing; this is a serious situation, however, in other aspect, it is also
interesting because you may get many kinds of answers from customer service
work candidates of kinds of work experience.
If I am responsible for
communicating with this customer, I will follow the company SOP, however, does
this company provide timely training for customer service department employees?
In my work experience in company OOO
and @@@, we apologized for our engineer attitude when checking the product flaw
and for the inappropriate attitude by customer service staff, and there was
nothing similar to your concern happen because of this situation, and the
customers also came and purchased again….
Thank you again
for sharing with me about work policy of this company, though, this interview
is short, however, it is quite different, I’ve learnt a lot!
Share with you.
