I would like to consult to you first, and there is no standard answer: Regarding [to please team members, to get supports], in your point of view, the top 10 greatest entrepreneurs in your mind, how they would define their own answers? Will all of them agree with it?! (You can also try to answer if it is less than 10! 😄)

How would you define [Pleasing]?!

I would like to define it as: [Intentionally] making target persons feel joyful through your specific expression or behavior, it is not the same as [complimenting], [recognition], [encouragement] or [treating with kindness] because:

(1)    In [complimenting], [recognition], [encouragement] or [treating with kindness] , the persons we are talking to have done something before we express our point of view or idea accordingly; especially [treating with kindness], we treat others with kindness is not always to make them [feel joyful]. For example: to treat employees well, and, if an employee has made a mistake, we need to properly deal with this case, however, we cannot bully this employee and spread this person’s mistake accordingly. There are some products or services, their producing or service providing procedures are dangerous, however, their companies would like to invest higher costs to protect the employees from potential danger, this is also a kind of treating with kindness, such as hiring more staffs for work shifts, providing multiple insurances or work protection facilities etc.   (Note1)

(2)    [Pleasing] means, people are willing to do something to make specific persons feel happy; however, these specific persons have not necessarily done something before this pleasing.

 

How do you feel about this kind of definition?!

In this article, some thoughts also came from my unpleasant work experience in the past, however, it doesn’t mean most people in work environment are bad persons, and the everyday purpose of going to work differs from people, not all of us would remember [going to work is to exercise the content of our work contracts], [we need to support each other to realize work deal in order to make ourselves achieve well]; I also got lots of benefactors’ supports (in forms of work assisting or moral support by my managers, coworkers, team members, even customers or suppliers), I hope could share my work experience with viewers who are destined to find my articles, I hope this can be a return to the kindness given by those who have helped me, I hope this could be a reference for those in need for their making the most appropriate choice for themselves and for the environment surrounding them at the moment they need it. Not all the people would agree or disagree with my point of view, however, I hope this sharing would help you to have some kind of valuable idea, because, your idea stands for the [value] of your personal thoughts, it would influence on the values of people who learn from you(e.g. your children, team members, relatives or friends, fans and other people who [respect] and love you). 1. People who are 45 or above, do you think the same?!

   I use the number 45, it is the average number of age of those direct managers or hiring managers I met at work or in interviews, I’ve met 3 until now(from countries), and they were in the work position of CFO, General Manager or higher, their management concept includes people managers should [please] subordinates or do similar things in order to earn support from them, or, it is for removing the fear or negative emotion triggered when they are facing to their managers, the purpose is to reduce the gap in the mind of both side; however, other department heads also think the same, and, regarding 45, it is not only to describe the age in the stories but it also means this mindset came from those who have already possessed strong and complete work experience.


In my first time receiving this kind of work expectation, I felt it was so weird😒, I thought it would happen only once in hundreds of years, it's interesting, I realized my this assumption was wrong after some work encountering later, this kind of idea is not rare; and, my idea is different from these superiors', in my point of view, in any kind of situation, people should respect each other in interacting, and, people also have the rights to choose to please others or not.

A supervisor pleases a staff should be an [occasional] state. E.g., A manager made a wrong decision  (Note1) and it caused the team members in a bad mood or they lost some kind of benefits at work, the manager needs to take the responsibility to mend it as soon as possible and to make employees feel happy; or, it is for a special event (a birthday celebration) or for an occasional situation (go visiting customers together, and the manager treated them to lunch) and making everyone happy, the manager also feels happy in doing it. If pleasing team members is a must, it becomes a work objective, I think it is inappropriate, and the subordinates may not feel happy about that, either.

2. Ice cream and spicy hotpot, I want both of them, do you agree?!

In the internet world, have you ever seen people quoted celebrities for times:[If you want to make everyone happy, don’t be a leader, sell ice cream!], it means, a leader who [pleases] everyone is not a good leader. I sent it a LIKE first, but later, I removed my LIKE, because….I prefer having spicy hotpot before having ice cream 😄😄😄! Thus, I hope could have both of them! 😄 Just kidding!

I commented under that post: I would like to define the sentence as [If you want to please everyone, buy everyone ice cream!], how do you feel about this?! Because, I feel it contains some kind of work discrimination in saying selling ice cream in the beginning, and no matter what kind of jobs being placed in that sentence, all are not appropriate. So, why  saying ice cream business?! (How do you feel about changing it as [be a "clown"!], is it suitable?! I think a clown is a person who possess higher work profession in this work field, because, in all their working time, they need to make customers feel happy, not all the leaders of other business industries are able to achieve this! Sometimes, a clown has the ability to make a person who is in deep depression to feel happy and turn to think positively, and, to make others feel happy is not doing something ridiculing, thus, it is also not a right word to fill in the intention of that original sentence, either. Do you agree?!)

-     Ice cream is delicious; there are many well-known brands all over the world.

-     Clown, is also a professional acting job.

-     I believe, in the original words, it didn’t mean to hurt anyone, it was to remind leaders need to behave appropriately because everyone learns from you.

3. Please include it in [Code of Conduct], because everyone needs to follow.

There was also a manager giving me a work instruction that I need to please my team members to gain work support, and, my colleagues also asked me similar questions and hope could know my idea; I’ll share my opinion in this paragraph, and I feel grateful that there was a direct manager, she would like to talk to me in a transparent way about my General Manager’s negative comment on me, she hope could know my opinion about those given information, finally, she told me directly [face to face in the meeting]  that I’ve just provided a very good concept, and she changed her decision accordingly, I felt my opinion was taken very seriously(feel grateful🙏)and, at the end, it proved, due to her decision changed, it indirectly avoided some business risk from their getting bigger, the root causes were not complicated, that is, if an employee is questioned, even everything at work being questioned, we need to ask:[Is this problem significant? What is the potential impact? It is some persons’ point of view or it is the company’s point of view?! If it is the company’s idea, why don’t we make it a rule?!]  Finally, the company also made some Personnel adjustment on the higher level managers accordingly.

 

Below lists my points of view and my feedback to related asked questions for your reference, you can also know and feel related stories background in the description:

(1)  A people manager’s work mission is to make consensus in the work department rather than pleasing all staffs.

- Please make an example, how to please all the team members in a more efficient way if a people manager needs to lead a team of 100 or more?

- To support our leader is to support work department objectives fulfillment; if a subordinate only supports those managers who would please them, is it a kind of his/her dereliction of duty?

- I’m also a subordinate, and, I always take the initiative to take required action, I don’t want my manager or the company thinks I need their pleasing me in order to make me invest at work.

- [A people manager needs to please team member]👈 Does it allow the entry level employees to disagree this kind of work instruction?!

(2)  It needs balance between work rights and responsibilities; it is not only team members, I will please anyone who will take the responsibility for the work performance of my work department.

(3)  A manager [must] please his/her team members, it is like a saying in Taiwan culture, [Upside down of the heaven and earth], it is similar to: an Emperor [needs to] please his officials.

There must be for some specific purposes, reasons, otherwise, it would lose the prestige of the higher up.

(4)  I (middle level) didn’t receive any flattery from my manager(higher level), then, why do I need to please my team members(entry level)?!

Who must please me?!

(5)  [Must] please, please make it a written policy.

-        [Must] means [please follow], [it doesn’t allow] people managers’ making decision at the right timing of behaving this, hence, please list it in the [Code of Conduct], and all the managers need to follow this rule, it should not be a rule only for me.

-        Make it a policy, so, I have the rights to ask for my manager to do something to please me.

-        Make it a policy, so, this rule [won’t] be changed [easily] due to management team changes.

-        Please define the standard behavior of pleasing for work obedience accordingly, because, it can’t be too much or not enough.

-        We need to know the reason why it cannot be included in a written policy but we must do it?!

-        Make it a policy, it means, it needs to get the [approval by the Board of Directors].

(6)  In Board meeting, why do we need to discuss our CFO facial expression at work? And, will it cause significant impact on our daily operation?! How to evaluate the impact?!(Those being discussed were, there was a new-hired General Manager bringing his own team join the company, team members including finance and accounting persons, however, the current CFO made the team members scared because she didn't create a joyful work environment, not smiling at work, never having lunch together with everyone, and "one day""how can she" leave the office and going home earlier than her team members' progress...)

- Why no one talking to CFO about this first

- Our chairman looks serious and everyone show respect; our CFO/I look serious and I am asked to smile at work?! Why there are two kind of standard?!

Is this a kind of appearance discrimination?!

Is there any job level discrimination?!

 

-Should our facial expression meet everyone’s expectation?!

- Is there anyone else also being asked for this?!

(7)  It is a good thing people can make friends at work place; however, I come for working, not for making friends. I have the right to choose making friends with whom.

Repeat (6), please, its last issue.

(8)Our General Manager allowed staffs’ crossing work level report, and, it was a manager’s facial expression issue which is not important, what do we need to deal with it? What is the General Manager’s standard of dealing with things?!

 

All the mentioned above is for your reference, however, I hope you don't need to use it in the future; if someday, you need to express your point of view of your standpoint, please surely be polite and stand firm, to express completely and clearly and that's all, do not expect people who are communicating with you will agree with you, because, in work environment(e.g. : M&A or new-hired manager...etc., the management environment is changing), sometimes, the purpose of communication is not to know the truth, it is just [let you know] about what is in discussion, and, your thoughts or truth is not important to them because their purpose is making you quit the job due to your sudden anger accordinglyIn this situation, I would like to define it as a not healthy or immature management mechanism or expectationI suggest you to assess the problems you are facing, the conflicts involve in one single work department only, or, it is the overall environment cannot support your career growth expectation fulfillment, if it is far away from your personal work purpose, if your daily work makes you get trapped in work political things and wasting your time, you need to make the best choice of your own time and career growth, and maybe, it is to change job and change work environment. Thus, at least, you need to deal with things that no one can challenge your good attitude. Wish you all the best.💪

On the other hand, not all the managers are like my former manager who would like to accept and adopt opinion which is different from theirs; some people/managers only want to get the feeling of [wining] when their opinion is different from others, though, in their point of view, they may not get any benefits from it, however, they think they lose the game if they accept others’ idea or to recognize the truth means they lose the game. Besides, some people may have victim attitude(Note1) or they say they are sacrificing something to make you feel they accept your idea is only because they need to, and they say this to make you feel unpleasant(Note1). There is a YouTube video created by a [Zen] related organization, its idea of dealing with inappropriate acts by others for your reference: just let it be its own way! If there is a person who chooses to ignore the truth, no one can tell them the truth (similar to this: we cannot wake up a person who is pretending they are sleeping; hence, why we want to wake them up?!). People can only manage and control themselves, as for feedback from others, it is others’ life lessons they need to learn well.

I would like to suggest you to believe there is karma, to speak and act carefully, we don’t know our karma created in past life, however, don’t create bad karma in this life time at least; a loose tongue may cause lots of trouble….

4. Are you sure?! What I can get in return?!

There was a team member in my work department, she was a senior mid –level team leader, she thinks I should buy them refreshments and snack just like how the former CFO treated them!

I replied: I found our accounting record is not clear, thus, it seems the former CFO brought you snack didn’t make you helping her maintaining a good accounting work. What I will get if I buy you something to eat?!

 

To please team members may create good memory when the manager and team members are working together, however, it won’t ensure the staffs would achieve fundamental work objectives accordingly.

 

In that company, the expense policy is sufficient for all work level of employees to claim required spending, I’m not sure the story the team leader shared is real or not, and, I don’t understand the necessity of the former CFO paying it; on the contrary, I encouraged everyone to [initiate ] taking about their raise or work promotion idea, maybe, they have some work potential or advantage and I didn’t see it, I’ll report it after our making the consensus, if finally we also get the approval by our General Manager, they are able to monthly enjoy the reward of their work efforts rather than occasionally getting the small benefits from higher up/me.

Maybe she thinks I’m too stingy for not buying her snack?!  😄

That’s not the thing I care.

Some employees would feel embarrassed if they request for a raise or work promotion, they also worry our General Manager will have negative opinion on them because of this initiatives, there are lots of uncertainties. However, to me, it’s like: I’ve opened the door; it’s up to you to come in or not! 😊

In my opinion, we need to find a right timing, proper work environment and event and people if we need to please someone, and it is not for comparing the given benefits or to strive for some kind of friendship or creating memorythe given snack and a raise, which benefit is bigger?! Everyone has different idea about this, however, the giver should have the [rights] to decide giving the benefit or not, right?!.

At the moment this story was happening, something came to my mind(self -talk): If my past manager know this, he may want to ask me:[you used to want me to buy everyone something to eat, why now you refuse to do the same to your team member?!] 😆😆😆

I also did analysis on what I was thinking and wondered whether my opinion is neutral, I used to initiate and pay when I worked for another company, however, I felt weird in doing this in this company; though the payment was small, finally I didn’t change my mind, the reasons were:

(1) The starting points of my request was my friendship with peers and our manager, enjoying work achievements reward together, if I was rejected, it won’t be a surprise and everyone would feel funny, moreover, it was also because of our friendship, we know there was a great possibility my idea would be accepted.

(2) This mid-level manager’s request, the starting point is to compare the management style of her former and current managers, it happened before, and we just met and have not known much about each other, yet; we were reinforcing our work efficiency at that moment, I felt it was my subconscious wanting me to reject her to let her realize any of the similar request needs to support our team work result, otherwise, I won’t adopt her idea.

 

It involves in management mindset and work culture, we can know in above sharing that the way the higher up manage a team would impact the value of how their team members view its whole situation, and not everyone would think the same way; thus, I would like to advise you to list related issues in an interview Q&A bank in order to know how the job seekers’ or hiring managers’ point of view in this situation, by doing this, people can identify whether there is possibility the both side can work together and think in the same work direction; regardless the outcome, I suggest the company or the Group to build up a compliance standard for management, then all the employees would have no need to change their work attitude due to their or their managers’ work rotation; please refer to above information at work.

Have you ever heard there is a kind of work environment not allowing their employees sending gifts to each other? It is mainly because the company hopes all the employees won’t encounter any kind of pressure after receiving the gifts and making the wrong work decision/not independent.

In this kind of situation, it is not easy to please others. Only people can do is complimenting.

6. Is it allowed to please ourselves?!

How would you answer this question?!

There is nothing wrong to reward ourselves for our work contribution, and the simplest reason is to affirm ourselves, thus, we find opportunities to please ourselves and happily to prepare the contribution for the work later. I agree some mental healers say [people need to focus on themselves], hence, I want to add something in it [do not forget to please ourselves at the right time], [how can we ignore ourselves?!], right?!

7. Actually, it is being sincere, having power and having capability to solve problems.

(1)  In front of you, there are 5 AI managers, their status are all the same, the only 1 difference is their own self introduction, and you need to vote which one is allowed to join your work department. The only 1 thing you can assess is their self-introduction, how you will choose?!

I will choose the one that makes me feel it’s reliable, and the way to make people feel us reliable is to act sincerely, thus, generally, in my opinion, in interaction with people, including its purpose is to gain team members’ support, one of the major elements is to treat people with our sincerity, and actually, it is the fundamental thing as a person (though, people say, there are some people not trusting others easily, however, in my opinion, everyone has their own trust verification mechanism, we cannot control others, only we can do is to manage ourselves well). Everyone must have heard there is a kind of top salesperson, their communication skill is general, however, their impressive personality is their behaving sincerely, and they are really sincere persons; we need to be sincere to earn trust, so, we are trustworthy then we’ll get support, isn’t it?!   

(2)  It is easy to understand why it is to possess power and work capability in this issue.

In a company, you are an entry level employee and you must choose someone to be your direct manager. Who to choose?!

A. There is a new-hired Executive VP, this person’s work level is lower than boss only, however, no one know this person’s outstanding work records or the comment by former subordinates. Though, we all know that people who are excellent at work are usually less noticed about the jobs they’ve achieved(they’ve already removed some risk, so, the risk has never happened, accordingly, you have no opportunity to be aware of what they’ve done for the risk), besides HR and the boss, no one knows this person’s work background.

B. There is another newly hired department manager, this person has obtained big fame in the industry due to this person’s outstanding work achievements, it is the same that no one knows how would this person’s team members describe this person’s management style or team work situation.

Which one you will choose?! How to choose?!

You want to know my choice?! I will ask another question and choose (3).

(3)  They need to be [capable] and also [would like to listen] to assist subordinates to solve problems.

Right?!

I would like to support this kind of manager: People who will listen to what their team members needs, and also have the work capability, though, they may not have enough power, they will do their best to help team members to solve problems; subordinates would like to talk about their problems relying on their managers act sincerely and initiating the talks at their work life, the managers would also keep it confidential and the team members are no need to worry this problems, they build mutual trust accordingly. If the managers’ work power or capability cannot reach what they want, the managers would also raise the issues and catch attention. This is also the so called taking the work responsibility.

No matter you are the manager or subordinate, you may unintentionally or intentionally hurt others, however, if the things have been already fairly made the judgement or you have been punished, you no longer want to talk about it, and the victim may use it to threaten you by revealing it for your paying endless benefit to them to stop their revelation, what you will do to deal with this kind of situation?!

In my opinion, if the judgement has been made fairly, and you didn’t run away from any responsibility of improvement, then👉.just let them reveal it! 😆What really can influence you is your thoughts rather than their action, do you agree?!

In my point of view, things around us, there is always news happening every second, it switch people attention from one another, there may be only 0.0001% would keep following your move, it may cause spreading the things, however, it may not be influencial. Thus, does it matter they reveal it or not?!
