For those who think themselves too old in job search and
get anxiety. (Office Workers)
If you feel anxious all the time when doing job
searching, please go to see a doctor to cure this problem first. This is the
most important thing for you.
How old is too old? 👴👵The answer varies by person; thus,
let’s skip that number issue here.
If you feel your old age has caused problems in your job
searching, though, I cannot promise you to get a job, I would like to share
some idea in this issue for your reference. Please let us know your opinion:
1. In all kind of job search related article, if they say:
yes, there is much more difficulties if job searchers’ age are older,
difficult, difficult, difficult…. But, there is “no” solution for you about “how/what”
to do “immediately” can possibly solve those kind of difficulties. Then, I
would like to suggest you not to read this kind of article, if you did,
please try to forget about it. Because, they cause your anxiety increase, it
also means the authors didn’t share any advice for job searchers in older age;
I’m not criticizing the authors, I meant, if we invest time and memory to
things that may cause our anxiety increase, it helps nothing in our job search.
Do you agree?
In my opinion, feelings(anxious or happy)creates magnetic
force, magnetic force attracts things similar to themselves, things influence
thoughts which have impact on making decision;if the article you read cannot reduce your anxiety or
increase your positive magnetic force, I suggest you to stop reading it to
avoid anxiety increase, that is more helpful to yourself.
2. What kind of negative impact would age increase “may”
cause to work efficiency and lead to the correlation between job search
difficulties and age increase?
Less physical strength? Less memory capability? Less
flexibility in doing things? Lower learning capability? Or, lower obedience of work instruction?
If you worry others may have doubt about your above
capability, please describe your strength directly in a specific section in
your resume, such as physical strength( to list your fitness exercising hobby),
memory( to mention you won a deal because of your good memory and you remember
a client’s name but you’ve not met each other for a long time), flexibility,
capability of learning and work instruction obedience and describe a real case
in self- recommendation page or a specific paragraph in your resume.
The most importance
is, you’ve already done the things in your life or at work, not only for job
search. Doing these things is also enhancing your work capability. And please
express it naturally, or, resume readers may focus on things you are worrying
if it makes people feel you list it intentionally and it won’t help.
3. Do you think you failed to pass a resume screening
because your listed age is older? And you also fell 「Why don’t they give me opportunities?」? Please do not guess what the company’s idea, because it
help nothing about your job search, and they surely have the rights to choose
among candidates.
Here is another question:will you surely be invited for interviews or hired if you
adjust your current age to a younger number? The answer is 「we don’t know」 from unemployed persons and the retired. Hence, why
guessing? Unless…someone will give you as a reward for your guessing (however,
there is no standard answer.).
What’s your idea?
Here is another question:Many years ago you were hired because you were younger
then?
If yes, please let us know how you know that? And let us
know the job search and talent search overall work environment? We would like to know the detail. Would you
like to share this information as an encouragement for younger job searchers?

Wish you going well in job search, however, if you are
rejected, there are 2 ways people frequently do accordingly, and please
consider which one has greater benefit to you before you plan to do it:
(1)Time is limited, not to dig out the cause of rejection
but to pursue other work opportunities continuously.
(2)Find out all the resource to know their reason of
rejecting you, strive for opportunities to go to the next phase of interview
(but, at that moment, you don’t know this work environment matches your
expectation or not, including people and everything; so how many time cost you
would like to spend in finding the cause?)
4. Review and update the way you express yourself in your
resume?
For example:I applied for and attended an English and Chinese
translation volunteer work, I asked the recruiter why they set an age limit in
candidates? They replied, there were older work contributors translating
English「You」 into Chinese「Thee」( which
usually only use in classical Chinese), it’s not for oral or general expression
nowadays.
5. You can always make a choice for yourself:To take a contract job or not when unemployed? To accept
a job which is not so compatible for your value? Or...?
Once you make up your mind, then plan the reaction for
any potential risks or opportunities that may cause from the decision you’ve
made. Search for others’ idea in internet. You’re always the decision maker of
your own career or job searching.
It doesn’t’ matter if you would like to change your last decision.
It is only you are responsible for the result of your decision, so, you have
the right to decide what is the best for you, right?
In recent 10+ years, I knew from news, there are at least
2 global famous companies newly hired CEO, not business owner’s family
successor, whose age were in the range of 55 ~ 62, and be considered as too
young and the youngest in hiring history. I provide this number for your
reference;and I’ve observed recruiting
information in job bank in Taiwan market for more than 10 years, starting from
about 2018, obviously, there are wordings like [Welcome middle aged and elderly
and reentering job market candidates’
submitting resume to us ] in talent searching companies’ job vacancy
information, in both managerial and non -managerial role, and they are
companies of great business reputation and well known in Taiwan at least.

Indeed, there are companies setting age limit in hiring, below are the reasons I know, for your reference, and those were what they need at that moment, it was not your problem:
(1) The hiring
manager is business owner’s family successor, age under 40, he works very hard
to get rid of all the control by people in father figure in their business, he
wants to prove young talents’ work capability and tend to not to hire people aged
above 40.
(2) The
company wants the work atmosphere more dynamic and active. The first thing
needs to be changed and comes to their mind is the younger age of their
employees. So, they define the age limit in recruiting.
(3) Actually, the
company, the business owner is seeking for their spouse, daughter or son in law
by talent recruiting process of the company, so they define an age limit.
(4) The company
unexpectedly cancels their hiring plan but they’ve already completed the
interview works with you. However, you match all their requirements, the things
they can make up as the reason for rejecting you is your age or education
background issue; sometimes, they use the term 【not suitable】 to explain everything. The actual reasons are:【overall cost saving issue, internal rotation is the
priority than hiring from outside talent market】, 【your work experience exceeds their
demand or higher than the hiring manager, the manager feels pressure】, so they rejected you.
What you can do? My advice:Sincerely appreciate the opportunity they created, keep
being a person of strong work capability, remind the company to share potential
work opportunity with you in the future, keep their contact information and do
self- recommendation in the future.
I do hope this information brings you some other kinds of
idea in age in your job search experience.
