【#DressCode】What’s your style today? 2022050002
Hi, this is Emily.
In this blog, this
article is categorized into: I see it
this way( please
If you are working for apparels related industries (such as apparels, tailors, fabrics, stylists etc.), or, all or part of your employees need to wear uniforms when they are at work, please be invited to utilize [ExpertsSay] to introduce your business professional knowledge or quality management idea(apparel) or the idea, thoughts or purpose of the color, style or material used for your employees’ uniform. Please also forward this information to your friends in related industries. Thank you!
Recently, we’re
discussing about the necessity of tailored –making work uniform for our exterior
walls advertisement engineers and dress code in the office etc.;the topic of 「dress properly and
professionally」 remind me of some
interesting things that I would like to share with you.
What’s the dress
code of your work firm?
Is there any
difference among working in office, store or factories?
And, at the same
time, everybody was discussing about dress code for office workers:「Can I not to wear necktie?」, 「Don't be scantily clad」, 「Smart casual」, 「Look friendly」, 「Depends on occasion and for whom to work with」…it was getting exciting in exchanging ideas, and our temporary conclusion
is:The Emperor's new clothes is not allowed ( Don't be naked) no matter what happened! 😲😆😆😆 ( Big Laugh! )
I was impressed
about「Look friendly」, one of my former colleague shared with me his point of view on formal
dress for work and his first impression of people from that, that was quite
different from my idea, and I feel it is persuasive. After that, I rarely wear
business suit and high -heels 👠to work. 😊 How do you feel about this description?
Usually, ladies in
high heels and gentlemen in neckties are seen as more professional at work.
-> Thus, does it mean customers will have greater purchase
intention because of this? What’s your idea about this point of view?

3 Objectives:Deliver Respect+
Feel Comfortable or Convenient + Dress Properly
Regarding our opinion
of dress for work, my idea is as above 3 objectives being considered at the same time, doing pros and
cons and concluding with the most appropriate style at that moment and place we
work at. Finally, it is surely we need to obey those dress code defined by the
companies we work for. What’s your idea for this topic? Please comment at below [Comment].
1st.Deliver Respect:This means the way
we dress needs to show our respect to ourselves, to work we’re doing and the
work partners we will interact with at some specific situation or daily work
life.
2nd.Feel Comfortable or Convenient:Clothes we put on
need to make us feel comfortable, or, it cannot limit the convenience of our
physical activities.
3rd.Dress Properly:It is required to
fit in the occasion, or, the purpose of activities .
Eg.:Auditors of an accountant firm. Please see below case A.
A.
Please decide for yourself, 「We don’t need to show we’re
professional by how we dress」.
The Chairman of the accountant firm I worked for
said that, and it was also my first job after my graduation from university, my
manager told me the Chairman’s sharing his idea to auditors ( the wording may
not be in the same way as I said now, but it means the same work concept). My
manager explained:
- This is an
encouragement:An accountant firm
is originally a professional-intensive service work organization in its nature,
therefore, the selected work candidates like us are bound be possessing
specific professional work knowledge already. Professionals like us, need to know what to wear.
-
It also reminds us to reinforce our
professional work knowledge and practical work skill in order to provide professional
work service for clients.
-
As for “how”, we can consider those we’ve already had, and
choose the best one/suit for work, especially on the day we need to「meet clients」😊, we need to be
sincerely making clients feel respected, however, do not spend too much time in
clothes selecting.
I think it makes sense; what’s your idea about this viewpoint?
※An interesting story:However, because of the tradition of「choosing the best clothes for work」, years later, there is a new –hired auditor wearing Tutu dress with lace coming to work, but, she needed to attend the team doing 「stocktaking」 for clients on that day 😆(no one told her she needs to dress something for her easier “climbing” on that day!) . It was surely not convenient for her; we cannot say she was not professional then. 😆😆

Plot of a movie:Erin Brockovich
Plots of movies (TV programs) reflect people’s life always.
What’s your idea about this comment?
This film was published in year 2000, a
true story of Ms. Erin Brockovich, related work industry of this story was the
lawyers. In a certain plot, communication
between victims/plaintiffs and the lawyers side, it highlighted the opinions of
the heroine( played by Ms. Julia Roberts ) who were in 【light clothing】 was much more
acceptable than those delivered by the firm assistant who was in formal suit
with an unsmiling face. It reminded me of a former work environment, due to my
own bigger- size body shape and following the style I dressed when working for
the accountant firm, business dress and high-heels, it brought pressures to
clients and meeting counterparts, thus, every time when we were performing
auditing or solving work conflicts, after some meetings, I intentionally
changed my style with flat shoes and light clothing, that really helped my
negotiation with clients or communication counterparts and we made work
consensus finally. 😊 What’s your idea about this situation?

Finally, may I ask
you a question?
If there are 「direct stores」 in your companies, the products are 「not apparels」 related but
consuming products or service related:
❓
What are the major products in the
stores?
❓What is the dress code for store
clerks?
❓What will your customers’ purchase
intention change if sales clerks wear necktie or high-heels? It will increase
or decrease? What’s your idea about this
issue?
【My observation】
The companies I
worked for, there were direct stores, not apparel but retailing and service
industries:3C digital , automobiles
importer, beauty and skincare, there is a common characteristic in their stores
clerks clothing:close to the products characteristic.
3C digital:Store clerks can wear jeans, have a top uniform, no tie or high heels regulations, there is an overall color
(including fingernails) limit ( I remember it only allowed 3 kinds of colors in
1 person at most)…This matches the products image, everyone is affordable to have it.
Automobiles importer:close to the image
of drivers.
Imported luxury cars - necktie and suit(male), low-heels
and pull-on pencil skirt(female);light uniform for mechanic.
American heavy chopper - it’s just like the motorcycle
drivers’ image in your mind, that is:neckties and
high-heels are not important. The sales manager told us, some buyers’
intention is regaining their young vitality and fun time etc.
Imported buses- because the products are big, they
are in assembling plant, not quite fit into this topic. However, there are also
rules for how they dress. Office workers are allowed to choose how they wear at
work and the mechanic needs to wear the branded uniform.
Beauty and skincare:female service clerks, their uniforms vary by their jobs, and there is no
specific rule for shoes, however, too casual style is not allowed, either. In general,
everyone in the store looks「beautiful」👸.
How about the style defined by your companies? Please share with us! Thank you!
This is Emily, I wish you get nice dress and bliss always! 😊
