Would
it be better if I list my hobby /interest in the resume 20211225

This subject is discussed in
the group [Career x Network]
in Telegram, and it is built up via invited individual members in Linkedin. In
my point of view, if your hobby, interest or non-career related specialty would
bring positive impact on your work, it is surely no harm to list it in your
resume, and that has greater possibility to gain the interview opportunity.
However, please do remember to re-examine and update this information as your
work experience is growing and this may not be necessary at specific moment.
I've
been invited for an interview because of I like [ballroom dancing]
; and I've invited a job seeker to interview because he loves [marathon].
In
the start-up period of job bank business in Taiwan, there is an optional column
in the standard form in the website [Hobby/Interest].
I was a fresh graduate then, I added [Ballroom Dancing],
that is my favorite campus activity at school. One day, I went for an [Accountant]job
interview, the interviewer asked me the reason I learned [ballroom
dancing],
my answer was related to [enhancing interpersonal skill],
and they told me[Our current work surrounding
feeling in Accounting Department is dull, we feel people who can dance ballroom
dancing may be much more lively and good at work coordination, we hope this
kind of people can join us and inspire the work atmosphere; and we think you
are the right candidate]. I felt shocked at that
moment and interesting. I also learned the hiring manager observation was so
detail oriented, and I felt grateful they decided to hire me, so impressive.
Now, I’ve been working for years and accumulating work experiences. I replaced [hobby/interest]
with [work
achievements], though, I hope could share this information
and experience for your reference.
When
I was concurrently doing recruiting, I found a job applicant listed his hobby
as[jogging
and marathon] related, and he also listed his achievements
in this interest and his purpose was to [increasing physical
endurance], it was so eye-catching, however, his work
specialty didn’t fit the work requirement much. After discussing with hiring
manager about his situation, we felt him may be a person who has great
enthusiasm at work and is committed to it, we decided to have a phone interview
in the beginning, and we hope could know how he likes this job and what he will
do to improve his weakness professionally.
If
we go back to the beginning, assuming I am the fresh graduate job seeker and I
have hobby or interest as above mentioned items, I would list below in my
resume:
[Ballroom
Dancing],
reinforcing work capability in interaction, communication and coordination(
team players, mind in sync), learning skills of interaction with strangers(
exchange dance partner).
[Jogging
and Marathon], continuously improving endurance and
concentration capability.
